Good website copy equals conversions

One of the hardest points to get across to a prospective client when you begin discussing Search Engine Optimization, or Organic SEO is the importance of good website copy. Most online business owners are only aware of the basics, they know they need to get ranked in Google, they know to do this they need to build an online presence, and finally, they know that they need traffic coming to their website.

But website copy? A lot of potential clients simply state that they have already uploaded their content to their website complete with brochure information and possibly technical data and that should work or is working just fine.

Well, statements like that are far from the truth. On the internet, words sell, images don’t and the optimization of website content is a vital online marketing skill that not everyone possesses. The goal is to get the user to take action!

Do’s:

  • Use keyword phrases in the anchor text of your links.
  • Create an intriguing, eye catching page title. Remember words sell.
  • Limit your keyword usage to 2 or 3 keywords per page. Otherwise, you may get tagged for keyword spamming.
  • Create supplemental content such as FAQ pages and related articles, etc.
  • Use the primary keyword phrase for that page in the first line of the description meta tag.
  • Keep an eye on your competition and how well they are ranking for the same keyword phrases.
  • Focus on the pages on your website that have the best conversion rates.
  • Think like a reporter, asking the five W questions (who, what, when, where, why).
  • Consumers look for local vendors, even when shopping online so display your location.
  • Optimize all graphics for the web and use image alt tags.

Don’ts:

  • Insert keywords into copyrighted material.
  • Forget what your audience is searching for.
  • Leave the title of your page as "Untitled", “Home”, “Welcome”…you get the idea.
  • Use too many graphics.
  • Wait to implement website content changes for seasonal sales. You will need up to 6-months when optimizing for seasonal content in order to give the search engines time to adjust to your alterations.

What Does Website SEO Mean for Your Business?

Did you know that website SEO can make a world of difference when it comes to doing business online? In fact, quality SEO efforts can mean the difference between your website coming up in the top spot on search engine rankings for all the big names in the business (Google, Yahoo, and MSN to name a few) and drifting aimlessly near the bottom of the list in relative obscurity—only to be discovered by the select few who know the direct link address of your web page.

Just so you know, this is not where you want the web site you've worked so hard to build and have represent your building wind up. Number one or even on the front page of all the major search engines is the goal you'd like to work for but not in some obscure search phrases that only a few people are looking for either. You want traffic to come to you as a result of your website SEO efforts. This is why it pays to have an expert work for you.

Not only does quality website SEO bring traffic to your website but it also works to ensure that the traffic is quality traffic. What this means is that the traffic is looking for what you have to offer. Let's say you are in the business of selling pipe cleaners. You would not want to land on page one for the search term “goat cheese” it wouldn't do your business any good.

Landing on page one for “pipe cleaner craft projects” on the other hand means that the people who find your page are interested in doing something with pipe cleaners already. Qualified traffic is quality traffic and solid SEO efforts will work to make sure the traffic coming to your site by and large is quality traffic.

Website SEO is also important because it lets visitors as well as the search engines know what your site is about. It takes more than a few cute graphics and a catchy headline to get the attention of the search engines or keep the attention of visitors.

Solid SEO efforts will give a sneak peak at what the website has to offer before the page is clicked on. This is one reason it pays to deal with experts who know the ins and outs of website SEO and making these efforts pay off behind the scenes as well as in the content and design of your website.
