The amount of links is not so important as the quality or what seomoz.org calls page strength.

http://www.seomoz.org/page-strength

The other way is to use a hub finder. The best one I found was by seobook.com
http://www.linkhounds.com/hub-finder/hubfinder.php
This tool will find the top sites for your keyword phrase then it will check who is linked to all or most of the top sites for your keyword phrase. This way you will know that to get to the top you will need a link from them also.

How many links does one need to get a good ranking?

"The better people you hang with the more perceived validation you receive."

How does one know which links are good to be associated with?
